Master Your Roll with the NEW OWW Rolling Course

Jun 30, 2025

Rolling is one of the most valuable skills in a white water kayaker’s toolkit. For many paddlers, developing a consistent, reliable roll feels like a significant milestone but can also be frustrating to learn for many. The good news? It doesn’t have to be.

Whether you’re learning to roll for the first time or trying to build confidence in dynamic environments, the our NEW Rolling Course offers a structured, accessible, and supportive path to success.

Why Rolling Matters

In white water kayaking, your roll is more than just a way to get back upright; it’s a gateway to freedom on the river. A reliable roll enables you to paddle in harder water, try new features, and take calculated risks, knowing you can quickly get yourself upright and continue paddling.

Once you’ve mastered this skill, everything changes. Suddenly, harder rapids feel more manageable, your confidence soars, and you stop dreading every capsize.

A Structured, Step-by-Step Learning Approach

As with all OWW courses, our rolling course follows a clear, progressive structure designed to alleviate stress and eliminate guesswork in learning. We start from the very beginning and break down each element of the roll into easy-to-understand stages.

Here’s what you can expect:

- Foundations First:
We begin with an introduction to the two most common rolls: the "Sweep" and the "C-to-C". You’ll learn the differences between them, when to use each, and which one might suit you best. We also discuss equipment and outfitting choices that can significantly impact your roll, such as thigh brace setup, seat height, and overall comfort in the boat.

- Build Your Confidence:
Next, we help you get comfortable being upside down in your kayak, a crucial step in reducing panic and improving control. We provide confidence-building exercises to help you stay calm, focused, and ready to roll.

- Learn the Body Mechanics:
The next section focuses on developing the right body movement. You’ll learn about terms like "hip flick" and "leg drive," alongside how to use your core, legs, and posture effectively during the roll.

- Partner Practice & 5-Stage Progression:
Once you’re ready, we guide you through a step-by-step process of learning the roll with a paddling partner. This section breaks down the movement into manageable steps, helping you integrate all the pieces without feeling overwhelmed. By the end of this stage, you should be able to capsize, set up correctly, and roll back to the surface smoothly.

- Building Reliability:
Once you’ve mastered the basics, it’s time to refine and strengthen your roll. We include fault-finding tips, drills to develop your off-side roll, and exercises designed to rebuild confidence after unsuccessful attempts.

- Coming soon - Taking It to the River:
In this section of the course we take the skills you’ve learned into real-world scenarios. Our "Rolling in White Water" section will provide structured exercises and tips for practicing your roll in current and dynamic environments, starting in controlled a controlled environment and moving into more challenging conditions.
