5 New White Water Rolling Lessons - Added to the Rolling Course
Jul 21, 2025
We have added 5 NEW lessons to our "Rolling Course", creating our "White Water Rolling" Section .
If you’ve been enjoying our rolling course and have gained confidence on flat water, it’s time to take those skills to the river.
Just because we have a good roll in the pool or on flat water doesn't mean that we can roll in moving water. It’s an entirely different environment that introduces variables such as turbulence, shallow water, rocks, eddy lines, and holes. Just as you didn’t learn to roll overnight in a pool, rolling in whitewater is a skill that requires gradual and intentional development. That’s precisely what these new lessons are designed to do.
π§ What to Expect in the Whitewater Rolling Section
Through five structured lessons, we’ll guide you through recommended tactics, mindset, and exercises to help you adapt your roll to real river conditions.
Topics include:
- Rolling in the current
- Managing your body position and setup while upside down
- Intentionally capsizing in different river areas
- Learning how to orient yourself underwater in control and identify the best direction to roll up
- Gradually building confidence in real river scenarios
Throughout this section, we will focus on developing your awareness, control, and consistency in rolling, all while increasing the complexity of the environment in a safe and structured manner.
π Venue Selection & Progression Planning
We’ll also assist you in selecting the right practice venues locations that mimic the feel of whitewater without overwhelming you. The goal is to provide positive, confidence-building experiences that foster growth rather than setbacks.
π Progression Session
Toward the end of the course, Chris will guide you through a staged progression plan to help you transition from flatwater drills to confidently rolling in dynamic whitewater settings.
One of the key points we want to convey is that mastering rolling in whitewater is a skill that takes time to develop, it’s not something you should expect to master immediately just because you’ve succeeded in the pool. And that’s perfectly fine!
If you start to feel overwhelmed, or if you’re having difficulty rolling up reliably in moving water, it’s wise to step back and revisit some flatwater drills.
This isn’t a failure, it’s a smart approach to skill-building. As with any aspect of paddling, it’s about gradually layering in complexity when you’re ready.
Rolling in whitewater may seem like a significant leap, but with the right mindset, a progressive structure, and solid foundational skills, it’s entirely achievable. These new lessons are designed to help you build confidence, stay safe, and truly enjoy learning to roll in moving water.
